Ways with Windows
Window dressings offer great scope for the imagination and creativity.
The huge variety of fabrics, headings, tracks, poles, pelmets and
blinds available to suit any style of decoration.
Before you make a purchase, decide on the effect you wish to achieve
and evaluate your constraints.
For example
- What practical features are going to influence your choice .i.e.
is there a radiator under the window? What style of window is
it - French doors, dormer or pivot?
- What shape id the window - bay or square? How does it open?
- How many windows are in the room? Do you need to treat them
all the same or as individuals? Do you need to maximise the light?
- How much clearance is there between the ceiling and the top
of the window? Obviously this will affect your choice of track
or pole. Poles need space above below to look effective. It may
be worth considering a ceiling mounted track.
- Is the room over-looked, so is privacy important? You may want
to screen the window during the day with blinds or sheers and
have curtains that pull close at night.
Curtains
Curtains are important not just for their functional properties
- to provide warmth, keep out the light and to give privacy - but
they pull all the other decorative elements together in a room.
Before selecting your fabric consider what you want the curtain
to do. For example, in children's rooms you want to keep the light
out at night but in living rooms you want both privacy and light.
Here you will need a combination of sheers and a top curtain, which
can be closed at night.
Curtain Fabrics
Most fabrics are suitable for curtains but avoid upholstery fabrics
because of their poor draping qualities. They are best left for
seating. Unless otherwise stated by the manufacturer. Never skimp
on the amount of fabric you use to save a few euro. Luxury is associated
with the amount of fabrics you use not the price per metre. |
